Adolescent Care

As the body undergoes significant changes during adolescence, it is important to begin gynecological care during these formative years. Even if a young woman is not sexually active, it is important for her to build a relationship with a trusted gynecologist. This is an opportunity to educate and advise young women about the natural changes in their body, as well as provide treatments for any conditions such as irregular and painful periods, premenstrual symptoms, pelvic pain, breast pain and masses, human papilloma vaccine (HPV), and advice on sexual health. Even though a pap test is not recommended until a woman is 21 years old, a complete physical exam with an examination of the external genitalia is advised. Depending on the patient’s sexual history or presenting symptoms, a pelvic exam may be indicated.

What should a young woman expect to talk about during her first gynecologist appointment?

Drs. Galasso, Hirsch & Russell want their young patients to enjoy good health while feeling comfortable and confident with their bodies.  They will answer questions and provide advice and information on such topics as menstrual cycle irregularities, including heavy bleeding and painful periods, PMS, breast tenderness, and sexual health. If necessary, the doctor will discuss contraception options, including oral birth control and intrauterine devices (IUD). The doctor will also answer questions about any other health-related issues regarding acne, weight management, and the emotional and physical changes that occur during puberty.
